You call us out of the singularity of our everyday world
Spirit of life, love, and community, you have called us into a world of the common and the shared.
In the concerns and worries, the need, and the want of our usual comings and goings we find it hard to stop and consider deeply what we are doing. In the hurry of a working day, in the hubbub of a holiday, among all the jobs and errands and work to be done, in our sadness and fear and anxiety we forget what it is that makes our life good.
To remind ourselves of the truly important things in life, we have come here for this short hour together.
We will try to leave behind our worries about household things; try to forget cares and anxiety about jobs, about school, about the day-by-day things we spend most of our time dealing with; try to remember what it is that helps us to feel good, to be good, to do good.
We will try to put aside the feeling that we face the world alone and remember that we really are part of one family of all people everywhere. All around the world there are gatherings just like ours, sisters and brothers and cousins in faith turning their minds and hearts toward the good, the better and the best, and holding us, too, in prayer. May they be blessed, upheld, and encouraged by our concern for them, as may we by their prayer and hope for us.
We turn our thoughts and care to the people around us now so that they may feel loved and wanted and needed here and in our larger community. May what we do bring the sense of your presence close, not only in this worship time, but in all our time.
Then we can carry the good things of our worship into the everyday world so that in the week ’til we meet again we do not feel alone but that the spirit of life, love, and community is with us all the time
