Meditation for Summer
Spirit of Life and Love,
too often we walk around with the eyes
and ears of our hearts tight closed,
and miss the beauties all around us.
May we be open to the entrancement that is summer…
If a combination of sunshine and rain
in just the right quantities
has blessed our world during the past few months,
the full glories of summer can captivate us.
On a forest walk, the cow parsley is over six feet high,
overshadowing the clover, buttercups, and many other
shy woodland flowers. There is a riot of wild roses,
and the song of nesting, foraging birds fills the air.
Bright butterflies and humming bees browse among the flowers,
in wood and garden, park and allotment,
enabling renewal to come.
The sky overhead is blue, and high,
with wispy white clouds, and the warm sunshine
paints everything it touches in brilliant hues.
On our coasts, the sea is blue and deep,
thrift, spring quill, sea campion, sea holly, and golden samphire
bloom beneath our feet, and the harsh cries
of seagulls fill the air, squawking and squabbling
over unconsidered trifles.
Children paddle, play in the sand, and collect shells,
content, in this short season, with simpler pleasures.
In the fields, the green wheat is slowly turning to gold,
and the brilliant yellow of the rapeseed flowers
are replaced by long, green seedpods. In the air, high above,
a skylark’s liquid song spreads a spell of entrancement.
And in the orchards, the fruit begins to grow,
patiently ripening towards harvest.

There is so much beauty in this
blue-green planet around us.
May our eyes be open to see it,
our ears be open to hear it,
and our hearts be open to glory in it.
May we do what we can to preserve it,
Now and always.
