Meditation for Winter

As the days shorten, and Christmas
and the Winter Solstice draw near,
It is time to follow the wisdom of the trees.
This season should be one of
stillness, darkness, dormancy, and rest.

Humankind was not created
to be constantly on the run –
like all created beings,
we need to remember to take time out
of our too frantic lives, to care for ourselves,
to set down our manufactured busyness,
and stop, take a deep breath, rest.

Advent is a season of anticipation,
a season of expectation.
It can also be
a season of stillness and reflection;
a chance to look back
on the year that has passed,
and to look forward to the hoped-for
renewal to come;
a time to nourish and replenish
both our bodies and our souls.

May we rest in the darkness, rest in the silence…

[silence]

May we be grateful for the wisdom of winter,
may we embrace the enriching aspects
of winter’s darkness, and rest in the silence,
finding a time and space of peace and tranquillity,
before celebrating the return of hope
as the days once more begin to lengthen,
when our lives will be renewed.

May it be so, Amen
