On this Good Friday
“…and the women that followed him from Galilee
stood afar off, beholding these things.” – Luke 23:49
On this Good Friday,
when we remember the suffering of Jesus at unjust hands,
his death on the cross,
we hold in our hearts those who suffer at unjust hands today:
all who suffer and die at the hands of
warmongers and terrorists,
tyrants and torturers,
oppressors and exploiters;
the victims of anti-Semitism and racism,
people persecuted and reviled because of their religion –
or someone else’s;
human beings whose humanity is denied because of
gender, caste or class,
people who are enslaved and trafficked by agents of evil;
prisoners of conscience in comfortless cells and frozen gulags,
innocents wounded and starving in wars not of their making,
would-be liberators whose liberty is denied,
champions of life whose lot is martyrdom.
All these and more we raise up in our prayers,
as we would raise them up with our hands –
as the women, standing and weeping by his cross,
raised up Jesus as he died.
